ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Much like the Edward Jones Dome had to compete with other NFL stadiums, the America’s Center is competing with other convention centers around the country, and officials say it needs some work to remain “top tier.”

Convention and Visitors Commission President Kitty Ratcliffe says a large convention the week after Christmas helped St. Louis post the best December in the nation, and 28,000 people will be attending two events alone in February.

Ratcliffe says when the CVC travels the country trying to impress meeting planners, they’re up against salespeople who are offering newer and flashier facilities.

She told the St. Louis Business Journal’s State of St. Louis breakfast, “We have to make some improvements. We have to continue to build our house, so that it competes with the other houses that these groups are looking at.”

Ratcliffe says the CVC is working with the city, St. Louis County and the hospitality industry to formulate a plan.

She says the Scottrade Center also needs upgrades, as do some fields and parks in the region which could host amateur events.
