St. Louis Alderman Needs Mathmatical Assurance For New Stadium

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The new St. Louis NFL stadium plan has yet to arrive at the Board of Aldermen. When it does, there will be a lot of questions asked about the math.

Aldermen Scott Ogilvie says when the funding package finally arrives, it’s going to be all about the math.

“I’m sure they can get fans there, but that’s not the question,” Ogilvie says. “The question is, ‘Is there a net tax benefit to the city?’ That’s really the question we ought to be looking at and I think so far that has gotten a little bit lost in the sizzle of the images of the new stadium.”

Ogilvie sits on the Ways and Means committee, which the stadium bill will have to get out of before it can go anywhere.

“I just keep going back to the question of whether it’s feasible for a city of our size, 320,000 people, to really have to own and maintain two NFL size stadiums,” Ogilive says.

The second stadium he’s referring to is the Edward Jones Domes. Ogilvie says backers will have to prove to him that the new stadium could generate enough tax revenue to pay for itself year-to-year. He doesn’t want the city dipping into general revenue to make stadium ends meet.
